Egyptian-Moroccan relations: Historical ties and prospects for fruitful cooperation

Egyptian-Moroccan relations have a long historical trajectory spanning decades, with diplomatic relations officially beginning in 1957. These relations are based on historical and cultural ties between the two peoples, as well as converging visions on a number of Arab and African issues.

Relations between Cairo and Rabat are characterized by a high degree of stability, political understanding, and joint coordination, especially with regard to strengthening joint African action and defending Arab causes.

Egyptian-Moroccan relations represent one of the important models of Arab cooperation based on common interests and mutual respect, with promising opportunities to expand this cooperation in the economic, political and cultural fields during the next stage, and to enhance the prospects for fruitful cooperation.

Recent years have witnessed increasing moves to enhance trade and investment cooperation between Egypt and Morocco, with work underway to develop industrial partnerships and exchange experiences in multiple sectors, reflecting the two sides’ awareness of the importance of expanding the prospects for Arab economic integration. The two governments are also working to activate the role of the private sector and encourage joint investments, which will contribute to increasing the volume of trade between the two countries.

The visit of Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch to Egypt comes at a pivotal time in the history of the Middle East and the Arab region, given the geopolitical transformations taking place in the region, which necessitates strengthening coordination and joint cooperation in order to preserve the security and stability of these countries in the face of these challenges.

This visit is also important and significant in the history of political and economic relations between the two countries, and it could have a profound impact on the course of joint cooperation between Cairo and Rabat to serve the interests of the two brotherly countries.

Earlier on Sunday evening, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly received his Moroccan counterpart at Cairo International Airport, where an official reception ceremony took place that included a review of the guard of honor and the playing of the national anthems of the two countries.

The two officials are scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting today, Monday, at the government headquarters in the new administrative capital, followed by an expanded meeting with the delegations of both countries to discuss ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Aziz Akhannouch’s visit comes within the framework of the two countries’ efforts to strengthen the strategic partnership and build fruitful relations in various fields that benefit the two brotherly countries.

First session of the Egyptian-Moroccan Coordination and Follow-up Committee

During this important visit, the first session of the Egyptian-Moroccan Coordination and Follow-up Committee is expected to be launched, bilateral talks will be held at the level of prime ministers, and a number of documents will be signed in several areas that serve to enhance bilateral cooperation between the two brotherly countries, including investment, trade and economic cooperation, within the framework of the two countries’ direction to strengthen the bilateral partnership and move to the stage of implementing joint projects.

This visit is expected to open up broad prospects for economic cooperation in multiple fields between Egypt and Morocco, as well as an exchange of views on the rapidly evolving regional developments, and a discussion of joint efforts to overcome them.

This committee is a new institutional mechanism aimed at monitoring the implementation of agreements and giving a strong boost to the partnership between the two brotherly countries, under the supervision of the Joint Higher Committee chaired by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and King Mohammed VI.

The new committee represents a qualitative leap, transforming relations from traditional cooperation to a structured partnership based on tangible results, particularly in the areas of investment, trade, industry, and economic integration. This inaugural session of the committee is expected to contribute to restructuring cooperation on a more balanced and effective basis, focusing on increasing trade, facilitating investment, and strengthening collaboration in strategic sectors such as agriculture, energy, and tourism.
