Egypt is the first line of medical defense in Africa... humanitarian support that transcends borders in times of crisis
From emergency supplies to building health capacity

In light of global health challenges and the worsening crises in many African countries due to the spread of epidemics and the lack of basic health resources, Egypt has emerged as one of the most prominent Arab and African countries in providing effective and sustainable medical support to its brothers in the African continent.
This role played by Cairo extends from sending urgent medical aid to building strategic partnerships for health strengthening, and reflects the state’s commitment to the policy of African solidarity and activating the concept of “health as a basic human right”.
Urgent support during health crises
Over the past years, and especially since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Egypt has sent tons of medical supplies and health equipment to dozens of African countries.

The Ministry of Health announced that it has sent medical support to more than 22 African countries since the beginning of the pandemic, including medicines, medical supplies, beds and ventilators, in implementation of the directives of the Egyptian political leadership to support its brothers in Africa in confronting the virus.
Cairo also played an important role within the framework of joint governmental efforts, providing medical assistance through the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development, which included shipments of medicines and medical equipment to more than 14 African countries, in addition to logistical support in cases of disasters and emergencies, which enhanced the speed of health response in critical moments.
Transfer of expertise and health capacity building
Egyptian support is not limited to in-kind assistance only, but also extends to transferring medical expertise and strengthening the health capabilities of African countries.
Egyptian civil and medical initiatives have also emerged, working to spread medical awareness and provide direct health services within African countries, reflecting Egypt’s role in promoting medical diplomacy and developing health relations with African countries through official and community channels.

Joint medical projects
One of the most prominent manifestations of Egyptian solidarity with Africa is the permanent medical projects, such as the establishment of hospitals and treatment centers in cooperation with a number of African governments, which provide specialized medical services to citizens and contribute to bridging the gaps in healthcare in some areas that suffer from weak capabilities.
Cairo has also sought to support efforts to combat chronic diseases across the continent, through large-scale treatment initiatives targeting diseases such as hepatitis C, and providing treatment and medical examinations in several African countries, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to achieving African health development goals.
Challenges and future prospects
Despite significant and ongoing efforts, Egypt and its partners on the continent face several challenges, most notably the scarcity of medical resources in some countries, the disparity in health infrastructure, and the lack of specialized expertise. However, Cairo emphasizes the importance of strategic partnerships with regional and international organizations to develop healthcare systems, including innovative financing initiatives and promoting local production of medicines and medical supplies.
