Senegal's president appoints economist Lo as prime minister

The President chose Ahmadou Amine Mohamed Lo, former Secretary General of the African Central Bank, former Minister of State, and current Prime Minister to oversee, guide, and evaluate the National Transformation Agenda for Senegal 2050, for his competence, deep knowledge of the country, experience in the complexities of economic and financial affairs, commitment, and loyalty. This reflects the president's desire to reassure international partners while ensuring that the executive branch operates more smoothly and harmoniously.

“Lou” is one of the most prominent banking figures in the West African region, having spent nearly 38 years within the corridors of the Central Bank of West African States. He possesses high competence in financial management, deep knowledge of regional economic structures, and political loyalty to the project of change.

Former National Director of the Central Bank of Senegal

Lo assumed the position of National Director of the Central Bank of Senegal during a sensitive period marked by major economic challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, he managed the country's monetary and banking policies with high efficiency. He also served as Secretary General of the Central Bank (BCEAO), which gave him a comprehensive strategic vision of the economies of the eight member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union.

After President Faye and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko came to power in April 2024, “Lou” was tasked with leveraging his vast economic expertise and was appointed to key positions, most notably as Secretary General of the Government (Secretary General), where he took charge of the administrative and executive work of the ministries.

If the engineer of Senegal's 2050 vision

Lo is the architect of the “Senegal 2050” vision, having been appointed Minister of State to the President of the Republic, tasked with monitoring, guiding, and evaluating the National Transformation Agenda 2050. This agenda is the long-term strategic plan upon which the state relies to achieve economic independence, digitize administration, and develop local resources (especially gas and oil).

It is worth noting that his appointment as successor to Ousmane Sonko comes within the framework of the Senegalese presidency’s desire to move the government from the stage of political consolidation to the stage of results and strict economic implementation.
