Kenya: Masimba Market opens in Nyaribari Masaba

At a cost of 55 million Kenyan shillings

In a new development step aimed at strengthening the commercial infrastructure and improving working conditions for small vendors, the modern Masimba Market was opened in the Nyaribari Masaba area of Kissi County in Kenya, forming an important addition to the government’s efforts to support the local economy from the bottom up.

A development project costing 55 million Kenyan shillings

The market was built at an estimated cost of 55 million Kenyan shillings, as part of the government’s programs aimed at modernizing popular markets and providing an organized and safe working environment for traders.

The project is part of broader plans to develop rural and urban markets in Kessi County, which will contribute to improving supply chains and boosting local economic activity.

Accommodating 300 traders and improving the work environment

The modernized Masimba market is expected to accommodate around 300 traders from various business activities, providing new opportunities for vendors who previously operated in unregulated conditions.

The market aims to reduce congestion and improve the flow of commercial traffic, in addition to providing suitable infrastructure for hygiene and security.

Modern facilities including refrigeration and storage

The new market provides modern facilities including storage units and cold storage facilities, which is an important step to support traders, especially in the food and vegetable sector, by reducing waste and improving product quality. This also contributes to raising the market value of goods and boosting the daily income of traders.

Improving the conditions of “Mama Mboga” and the rest of the traders

Local officials said the project fulfills a promise to improve the conditions of traders, who previously conducted their business in the open, exposed to the dangers of rain, scorching sun, mud and dust.

The supervisory authorities added: “We are fulfilling our promise to provide decent workplaces for Mama Mboga and the other traders, market after market. The traders were conducting their business in the open, exposed to rain, scorching sun, mud and dust.”

Promoting bottom-up development

Officials stressed that the new market reflects the concept of “building from the bottom up,” where local infrastructure is invested in to support small business owners, who are considered a key driver of economic growth in Kenya.

The project is expected to contribute to revitalizing the local economy in Nyaribari Masaba, by increasing trade and creating indirect employment opportunities in the areas of transportation, services and food supply.
