The Chairperson of the African Union Commission discusses the Ebola crisis and peace in the continent with the President of Burundi.

Ahead of the Ebola summit, the African Union is mobilizing its efforts to address health and security challenges.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, His Excellency Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, was received at the Presidential Palace in Bujumbura by His Excellency Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi and Chairperson of the African Union Assembly, ahead of the African Union Summit on Ebola, scheduled to be held tomorrow under the chairmanship of President Ndayishimiye.

During the meeting, the Chairperson of the Commission briefed the Assembly on the evolving Ebola situation in Africa, based on data and assessments from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), as well as the response efforts undertaken by affected Member States. The spirit of solidarity and support from Member States and international partners was also emphasized.

The meeting also addressed a number of strategic priorities of the African Union, most notably the institutional reform process aimed at enhancing the effectiveness, efficiency and responsiveness of the organization.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission met with the President of Burundi in Bujumbura to discuss developments related to Ebola, peace, and institutional reform.

The Commission Chairperson commended the leadership of President William Samui Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya, in supporting this important reform process.

The African Union’s efforts in the areas of peace, security and mediation were also reviewed, including developments in Sudan, South Sudan and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as support for the restoration of constitutional order in the Sahel region.

The Chairperson of the Commission expressed his deep appreciation to President Ndayishimiye for his leadership and continued support for these continental efforts.

For his part, President Ndayishimiye appreciated the visit and the comprehensive briefing, stressing Burundi’s commitment to supporting the African Union’s reforms and strengthening peace, stability and health preparedness efforts on the African continent.
