AFCON 2027.. East Africa Prepares to Write History with a Trio of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania

An event reflecting the region's ambition to present an exceptional edition

As the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2027) approaches, preparations are intensifying in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania to host the first-ever edition of the tournament to be co-organized by three East African nations. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 18, 2027, with the participation of 24 African teams.

Kenya: Stadium Upgrades and New Sports City Construction

Kenya is leading a significant part of the preparations by developing its historic stadiums, most notably the Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums, alongside the creation of the “Talanta Sports City” project, which will be one of the most prominent stadiums in the tournament. The government is also working on equipping training grounds and improving transportation networks and logistics to host fans and delegations, as part of a plan aimed at leaving a long-term sporting legacy.

Tanzania: Huge investments in infrastructure

Tanzania continues to implement major sports projects, most notably the construction of the Samia Suluhu Hassan Stadium in Arusha, in addition to the development of the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Road, hotel, and tourism facility upgrades are also underway. The government is betting on the tournament to enhance the country's status as a sports and tourism destination in Africa.

Uganda readiness of stadiums and hospitality development

In Uganda, work continues on the development of Mandela National Stadium and the new Hoima Stadium, with additional training pitches being prepared and an expansion of hotels and accommodation facilities, in line with Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. Authorities are also working on improving transportation networks between host cities to facilitate the movement of delegations and fans.

A championship that goes beyond football

The importance of AFCON 2027 extends beyond athletic competition, representing an economic and developmental opportunity for East African countries.

The championship is expected to contribute to revitalizing tourism, attracting investments, and creating thousands of job opportunities, in addition to developing infrastructure that the region will benefit from for years after the championship concludes. The championship also promotes the concept of regional integration through the “Bamouga” project, which embodies cooperation between the three countries.

Race against time for a historic edition

Despite the noticeable progress in construction and development work, some projects still need to be completed according to the specified timelines to ensure full readiness before the kickoff.

The Confederation of African Football confirms that preparations are on the right track, with inspection visits and coordination between host countries continuing to ensure a historic edition that reflects the development of African football and lays the foundation for a new era in hosting continental tournaments.
